A new benchmark for Oregon Chardonnay: the first Oregon wine with a perfect 100-point score by Decanter.com
Oregon’s Willamette Valley has long been celebrated for its world-class Pinot Noir, but a new star is rising from its vineyards. The Bethel Heights 2023 The High Wire Chardonnay has made history by becoming the first Oregon wine to be awarded a perfect 100-point score by the prestigious wine publication Decanter. This achievement not only elevates the reputation of Bethel Heights but also firmly establishes Oregon as a serious contender for top-tier Chardonnay production.

The winemaker’s vision
At Bethel Heights, the winemaking philosophy for Chardonnay is a careful balance of tension and vibrancy. The winery’s notes explain that they favor these qualities over opulence and richness, believing this approach provides the most authentic expression of their cool, wind-swept terroir in the Eola-Amity Hills. The 2023 vintage is a true testament to this philosophy, showcasing a complete portrait of the season from grapes sourced from both the Justice and Bethel Heights Vineyards. The wine is a 100% Chardonnay blend of several clones, including 548, 76, 95, and Wente, each contributing a unique character to the final blend.
A closer look at the wine
The technical details of the 2023 High Wire Chardonnay reveal the meticulous care that went into its creation. The grapes were harvested between September 20 and October 1, 2023, with a balanced Brix of 21.2 and a bright pH of 3.08. After fermentation and aging for 10 months in 28% new French oak, the wine was bottled unfined on July 8, 2024. With a finished alcohol content of 13.1%, this is a medium-bodied, dry white wine with a vibrant acidity and a graceful structure.
This wine is produced in a limited quantity of just 710 cases of 750ml bottles and 150 cases of 375ml bottles, making it a highly sought-after release. As one of the flagship wines of Bethel Heights, the Estate Chardonnay has been a transparent statement of the winery’s terroir since 1984. It is one of the few wines that carries the family name, representing the epitome of each vintage at Bethel Heights.
Cellar & serving tips
To ensure the best experience, proper storage and serving are key. The winery recommends storing bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place below 57°F (14°C). This wine is crafted to age gracefully for at least a decade, but if you choose to open it while young, decanting for at least an hour before serving is highly recommended. This allows the wine to open up and breathe, revealing its full complexity. Serve this exceptional Chardonnay chilled to about 50-53°F (10-12°C) to highlight its intricate aromas and refreshing character.

The Bethel Heights 2023 The High Wire Chardonnay is more than just a wine; it’s a milestone. It stands as a powerful statement for Oregon winemaking, proving that the region can produce Chardonnay of the highest caliber and a vintage that will be remembered for years to come.
